Townsville City Council has approved the refurbishment of the historic Seaview Hotel on The Strand.
Townsville's growing economy will receive another boost when Sydney's Paul Irvin Hotel Group revitalises one of the city's favourite pubs.
Planning and Development Committee Chair Deputy Mayor Les Walker said the renovated Seaview will attract a lot of interest.
"It will be exciting to see a major refurbishment like this on a much-loved and iconic hotel on The Strand – one of the most popular destinations in the city," Cr Walker said
"There is a growing interest from businesses looking at opportunities in Townsville - and projects like this build momentum to attract further investment to our city.
"This development will create jobs across a number of sectors – it will employ local tradespeople throughout construction and it will need ongoing hospitality workers.
"It will be an improved drawcard on The Strand and help stimulate other businesses in the area."
Cr Walker said the refurbishment of The Seaview will enhance its heritage.
"The owners will retain and enhance The Seaview building and maintain its iconic features," Cr Walker said.
"The plan will re-establish the original windows on the building frontage along the front corner of The Strand and Gregory Street."
The Hotel Group will refurbish the hotel and the popular beer garden – and it will move the drive-through bottle shop and create a new gaming room.
The Seaview is among the buildings listed on Townsville's local heritage register.
It was built in 1929 and it was designed by Townsville architect Joe Rooney.
