Greater Shepparton City Council has endorsed a recommendation outlining further options for the future of the Shepparton Italian Social Club (SISC) building.
At an Additional Council Meeting held on Tuesday, Council approved a framework that supports the potential reinstatement of the former SISC building, located within the Princess Park precinct, subject to several conditions and approvals, while also providing alternative options if the SISC choose to pursue a different long-term solution.
Under the endorsed resolution, Council approved in principle a contribution of $1.2 million towards reinstatement of the former SISC building, subject to planning and regulatory approvals, flood risk considerations, a funding contribution from the club, and the execution of relevant agreements.
The resolution also includes alternative options if the club decide not to pursue reinstatement, including a potential $1 million grant contribution towards the purchase of an alternative facility, or an ex-gratia payment of $500,000 under specified conditions.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said the decision reflects Council's commitment to providing certainty for the club while recognising the significant challenges created by the October 2022 floods.
"The decision provides a considered and practical pathway forward for the Shepparton Italian Social Club while ensuring Council remains accountable to our community and ratepayers," he said.
"This is a complex issue with the site carrying significant risk due to flooding. Council have always operated in good faith and maintained a respectful working relationship with the Shepparton Italian Social Club to reach an outcome that accommodates community expectations while allowing for a practical way forward."
Council considered the recommendation in response to a proposal received from the SISC on 7 August 2026 and acknowledged the work undertaken by Council officers to progress the matter following the previous Council resolution on 28 April 2026.
Cr Sali said Council recognised the longstanding contribution the SISC has made to the Greater Shepparton community.
"The Shepparton Italian Social Club has played an important role in our community for many years, and we acknowledge the dedication of its members and committee throughout this process," he said.
"This resolution provides three options for the Shepparton Italian Social Club to consider as it plans for its future, and we hope it gives members the confidence and certainty needed to determine the next chapter for their community."
Council will now work with the Shepparton Italian Social Club to implement the resolution and finalise the agreements required to advance the club's preferred option.
