Council, Businesses Tackle Crown Lane Dining Changes

Wollongong's Crown Lane is a service laneway that was temporarily closed to vehicular traffic in 2021 as part of an outdoor dining trial. This was supported by the NSW State Government through their CBD Revitalisation Grant Program.

Wollongong City Council's outdoor dining trial in Crown Lane, which began in 2021, has been a success, adding vibrancy and supporting economic activity in the Wollongong CBD. Several local businesses have participated in the trial, helping to create a lively laneway experience for the community.

Wollongong Central Shopping Centre is located on the southern side of the laneway and requires clear access to the laneway as part of their fire compliance arrangements. In 2025, it was made clear to Council that some outdoor dining structures installed as part of the trial do not meet requirements outlined in Wollongong Central's fire safety schedule

Council's top priority is community safety. Council has now informed businesses directly impacted, including those licensed for outdoor dining, and is working proactively with them to remove outdoor dining infrastructure as soon as practically possible. The laneway will remain temporarily closed to vehicular traffic between 5 Crown Lane and Crown Street to keep the laneway pedestrian friendly.

Council will continue to work with Wollongong Central, Fire and Rescue NSW, and directly impacted businesses to facilitate discussions between stakeholders – including hospitality operators in Crown Lane – to explore short and longer-term options that ensure fire compliance while also activating the laneway, including potential opportunities for outdoor dining.

Council remains strongly supportive of outdoor dining in the CBD and across our suburbs. At its 17 November 2025 meeting, Council resolved to waive outdoor dining fees for the next three years across the local government area. From outdoor dining and live music to cultural events, we're working to create spaces for people to enjoy the city at night to create a safe, vibrant Wollongong CBD that locals and visitors enjoy.
