Townsville City Council advises that due to current weather conditions, some planned New Year's Eve events have been cancelled.
Mayor Nick Dametto said the decision was made with community safety in mind.
"Unfortunately, due to the weather, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Sounds on the Sand concert at The Strand, including food trucks and amusements, and all planned activities at Riverway - including the fireworks display," Dametto said.
"Your safety is our priority. Please take care in the wet conditions."
Despite these cancellations, fireworks displays at the Strand and Nelly Bay are still scheduled to proceed.
"The Strand will host an early, family-friendly display at 8pm, and The Strand and Nelly Bay will light up the sky again at midnight." Cr Dametto said.
Free bus services between The Strand and Dean Park will also continue as planned to help people move around safely.
Cr Dametto said Council will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates if the fireworks schedule changes.
"While it's disappointing to cancel some aspects of our New Year's celebrations, this is part of life in North Queensland during the wet season." Cr Dametto said.
