Council encourages residents to prepare ahead of predicted king tide

Townsville City Council is encouraging residents to take precautions before the predicted king tide this weekend.

The king tide is expected from Sunday through to Wednesday next week with the peak reaching 4.05m on Monday and Tuesday at mid-morning.

Townsville Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Cr Jenny Hill said the tides may impact low lying areas.

"Those living in or visiting areas such as South Townsville, Railway Estate, Hanran Street and Ogden Street in the CBD may be impacted by the king tides," Cr Hill said.

"Anyone who is uncertain or new to the area should talk to neighbours to find out if your property is likely to be affected by salt water flooding, move valuables and cars to higher ground, and observe any warnings.

"If you are driving remember to exercise caution and remain vigilant around flooded roads – if it's flooded forget it."
