Council has its eye on safety with installation of new CCTV cameras

Shoalhaven City Council has welcomed 10 new security cameras along the Nowra Riverfront as part of the Nowra Wharf and Bridge Precinct Safety Project.

Council is the recipient of up to $625,000 from the Australian Government's Safer Communities Fund for the project which includes the supply of CCTV mobile, fixed CCTV, and their installation and removal around the Nowra Riverfront Area.

Shoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley said that this upgrade is important to help maintain and enhance community safety and to encourage residents to spend more time along Nowra's beautiful riverfront.

"This project aims at improving community safety. Council is committed to working in partnership with the local community and other government bodies to ensure that the security of the Nowra riverfront is enhanced." Mayor Amanda Findley said.

"These cameras have been in action and have been monitored on a 'round the clock' basis since 1 July 2019, ensuring that residents enjoying the riverside are safe."Clr Findley said.

The most recent stage of the project has seen installation of cameras and poles between Nowra Aquatic Park, the Riverfront and Nowra Wharf through the installation of fibre, hardware and road underboring - including pit installation.

In addition to the installation of these cameras, a number of pontoons have been installed at the Riverfront and Nowra Wharf to increase natural surveillance by attracting more people to the area. This aspect of the project is consistent with the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), whilst the new CCTV installation was identified as part of the Shoalhaven Crime Prevention Strategy 2016 – 2021.
