Council is advising pet owners to take care around Townsville beaches following the tragic death of three dogs who had visited Rowes Bay last week.
While the exact cause remains unknown, Council and local veterinarians believe naturally occurring toxins arising from mouldy coconuts on the beach had been ingested by dogs in the area, leading to their sudden deaths.
Council will continue to monitor coastal conditions for any algal blooms that arise.
Pet owners are advised to keep their dogs away from Rowes Bay Beach until further notice and prevent their pets from chewing or playing with fallen coconuts or drinking from puddles.
Owners of dogs who have been in the area that are displaying signs of illness should contact their vet immediately.
