Townsville City Council has shored up the future of Townsville Target Archers, the largest archery club north of Brisbane.
The club has been based in Rosslea Park for almost 50 years and Council has extended its stay with a 10-year peppercorn lease.
Acting Mayor Les Walker said the agreement gives the club certainty for the future.
"This means the Archers can build a shed that will have storage space and a sheltered viewing deck for its members," Cr Walker said.
"Council is doing all it can to develop a healthy city and community sporting groups are an important part of the equation.
"Townsville Target Archers were founded in 1946 and moved to Rosslea Park in 1969 so it has a long history in Townsville."
The Archers have hosted major events including the North Queensland Games and the North Queensland Archery Association Target Championships.
Council has extended another long running partnership between Townsville Central Little Athletics and Queens Park.
The club has agreed to a 10-year peppercorn lease at the Park. It's been based at the site for almost 30 years.
Cr Walker said the club is an important part of the community.
"Townsville Central Little Athletics is driven by some wonderful volunteers," Cr Walker said.
"Its membership has increased steadily which reflects its programs and activities.
"The lease will allow the club to construct a shed that will have storage space for all of their equipment.
"It's had to find off-site space for its gear and it has been a strain for its volunteers."
Both peppercorn leases were approved at last month's full Council meeting.
