Federation Council is highlighting disability access and inclusion throughout November for its annual Federation DisABILITY Month. Hosted by the Federation Disability Access and Inclusion Committee, the month-long initiative aims to raise awareness, provide information, and educate the community on the role everyone plays in supporting one another.

With over 20% of Australians living with a disability, many people in the community likely face daily challenges related to access and inclusion. DisABILITY Month serves as a reminder that we all have a role in fostering a sense of belonging and wellbeing for everyone.

Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook said a key focus for the month is ensuring public pathways are safe and accessible. Council is reminding residents of the importance of property maintenance, as overgrown vegetation can create significant barriers.

"With spring in full swing, Council encourages residents to ensure community safety by keeping properties regularly maintained now and into the future," said Mayor Cook.

"Overgrown shrubs, low-hanging branches, and encroaching weeds can make footpaths difficult or impossible for individuals using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or walkers. These obstacles also pose serious tripping hazards for people with visual impairments. Property owners can play a crucial role by regularly trimming vegetation away from footpaths, ensuring everyone can travel safely and independently."

Residents are invited to get actively involved by joining a community streetwalk in Howlong on Thursday, 27 November.
