Byron Shire Council is considering a move to electric only connections in new residential and non-residential developments.
Currently people building a new home or development have the option of connecting to natural gas or electricity for:
- Cooking
- Heating
- Cooling
- Hot water.
In line with some other councils in NSW, Byron Shire is considering phasing out gas connections, for new developments for reasons including cost, environmental impact and health impacts.
The proposed changes do not apply to existing homes or businesses. Those properties connected to gas supplies will continue to have access to gas.
Council is seeking feedback on the proposed amendments relating to electric connections in the Byron Shire Development Control Plan (DCP) 2014.
