In an environment that has changed for many people over the last four months, financial hardship is facing many residents in the Snowy Monaro region.
Snowy Monaro Regional Council is required to charge rates under the legislation, but residents who are facing hardship should approach the council to seek support as the fourth quarter rate notices will be going out shortly.
"This year has been challenging and difficult for many people in our area with the ongoing drought, bushfires and now a pandemic. Business downturn and loss of employment has affected many more than we would like across our region," Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor Peter Beer said.
"Those residents facing financial hardship may enter into arrangements with Council for payment of rates and the potential to waive interest charges. This will allow people to get back on their feet faster when things improve."
Council's Chief Executive Officer Peter Bascomb supported this call.
"By contacting Council early, people can reduce the pressure they may face with bills and reduced income. Discussing the situation, entering into an arrangement and keeping the conversation going if situations change is important. It allows us to help you," Mr Bascomb said.
