Council is delighted to be undertaking two special large-scale Citizenship Ceremonies in February and March to welcome our newest Australian citizens.
Prior to COVID-19, ceremonies ordinarily invited about 60 pledgers per month.
But during February and March, Council will be welcoming 300 pledgers at Townsville Stadium, starting with a ceremony this afternoon.
Mayor Jenny Hill said she was looking forward to being a part of overseeing the larger ceremonies and was delighted to see over 50 countries of origin represented.
"These ceremonies are special events to celebrate the granting of citizenship to our newest citizens from diverse backgrounds," Cr Hill said.
"They are always meaningful and emotional occasions as these people become full citizens of Australia and we're delighted to have extra numbers taking the oath over the next two months.
"The highlight of these events are the official citizenship oath-taking and presentation of certificates of citizenship.
"Welcoming new Australian citizens truly is one of my favourite parts of my role as Mayor."
The Mayor will be joined by fellow Councillors and local members of parliament as Townsville welcomes hundreds of new citizens making Australia their permanent home.
"This will be a unique opportunity to witness these individuals becoming Australian citizens," Cr Hill said.
"They are making a commitment to Australia and everything Australia stands for – unity, diversity, and equality – that are the foundation of our society."
