At its Council meeting on 19 April 2023 the Council adopted the recommendation to merge two existing strategies into one brand new Strategy and Council is now asking for community input into the development of a new Climate and Environment Strategy.

Mayor Bernie Hearn said 'the initiative will provide Council and the community with a clear roadmap towards a sustainable future and help maintain and enhance our environment.

"We are excited to announce the development of a new Climate and Environment Strategy that will bring significant long-term benefits to our residents," Cr Hearn said.

"By developing this strategy in consultation with the community, we aim to ensure a thriving and resilient community for generations to come.

"We value your input and want to hear your thoughts on key environmental matters and climate change concerns in our municipality."

Community members can get involved through the online Have Your Say Benalla platform or by joining Council staff and Councillors for face-to-face sessions at various locations, including Swanpool Cinema, Baddaginnie Hall, Goorambat Hall, and the Benalla Lakeside Farmer's Market. Dates and times of these sessions will be announced soon. The outcomes of these sessions will tell Council what is important to our community and help shape actions that will be undertaken by staff over the next five years.

"Your participation and input are vital as we shape our collective response to ensure a sustainable future" Cr Hearn said.

"As we move forward, we will continue to invest in renewable energy, transition to electric vehicles, and integrate sustainable practices into our operations.

"By promoting economic, social, and environmental sustainability within the municipality, the Council aims to address climate change and mitigate the risks it presents."
