On Monday 12 May, at the official launch for National Road Safey Week, in Sydney, Goulburn Mulwaree Council was announced as a Yellow Ribbon Council.
Council and the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), in which the two organisations will work together to promote road safety in the region.
The SARAH Group was founded by, Peter Frazer OAM, after his 23-year-old daughter, Sarah, was tragically killed in a road crash on the Hume Highway in 2012. The following year, National Road Safety Week was launched. The group is committed to improving road safety through policy development, education, advocacy, and collaboration with government and community organisations.
Mr Frazer stated "I don't want any other family, friend or professional network, or community to experience the loss we went through when we lost our darling Sarah. She never leaves our hearts or minds for a minute, and we are asking people to be aware of their own behaviour on the roads to make it safer for everyone."
Council is proud to continue its long-term commitment to road safety, and to formalise the existing strong partnership with SARAH. "By endorsing the Yellow Ribbon Road Safety Council MOU, we're reaffirming our commitment to making our roads safer through meaningful partnerships with trusted organisations like SARAH," said Acting CEO Marina Hollands. "This collaboration will drive a range of initiatives—from raising public awareness and improving infrastructure to engaging with our stakeholders to create lasting change."
"Given that two thirds of NSW's death and serious injuries occurs in our regional communities, it is more important than ever to improve our roads and how we use them to get everyone home safe. I couldn't be prouder of each of these Yellow Ribbon Road Safety Councils, and I thank them sincerely for their great leadership!" Mr Frazer said.
