Council To Carry Out Cemeteries Clean-up In November

Cairns Regional Council will begin a clean-up across all Council cemeteries from 3 November, with works expected to take about a month.

Over time, various unapproved memorials and prohibited items have been placed on graves. While left with care and good intentions, some can become dangerous in high winds, pose risks to maintenance staff, block waterways, or cause environmental damage.

Items to be removed

As part of the clean-up, Council will remove items such as:

  • Damaged or loose plastic flowers not in approved receptacles
  • Glass, ceramic and other breakable objects
  • Draped or flying flags
  • Lights (solar or battery powered)
  • Alcohol containers (full or empty)
  • Clothing, jewellery and accessories
  • Balloons, photo frames, candles or naked flames, windchimes, toys, furniture, statues and ornaments
  • Items with sharp edges, spikes or hooks
  • Potted plants

Families encouraged to collect items early

Families are encouraged to collect valuable or sentimental items before 3 November, as removed items will not be stored or returned.

Council will not remove unauthorised white crosses that are in good condition and securely placed.
