Council to open staged tender process for leachate management

Townsville City Council is looking for new ways to manage leachate after the unprecedented monsoon impacted the leachate ponds at Stuart.

Council has endorsed opening a staged tender process to manage the leachate that forms at the Stuart Waste Facility.

Leachate is the liquid that is produced as waste is broken down and Council is looking for a new solution to help manage it at Stuart.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said this tender process is important for making sure Council finds the best method for managing the leachate on site.

"While we do have a leachate management program currently in place, the Jensen and Hervey Range facilities have both recently reached capacity, putting extra pressure on Stuart," Cr Hill said.

"We've also recently gone through a major rain event that has impacted the amount of leachate that has formed.

"A staged process is the best way for Council to find a solution to manage the leachate at Stuart, ensuring we get value for money and protect the environment for the remaining life of the facility."

Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said the staged tender is the best option for Council to find a new method of management.

"There are several ways to manage leachate that vary wildly in approach, cost, and technical reliability," Cr Cook said.

"That's why Council Officers have recommended using the EOI method for finding a solution that will do the job well.

"It is a rather specialised project, so we expect to see varying submissions and from there, we can determine what will best suit the Stuart Waste Facility."

Council will inform the community when the tender opens on Tenderlink for submissions.
