The program will support local businesses through one-on-one mentoring focused on real challenges, real conversations and real progress.

The first mentoring period will run from May to July 2026, with applications now open for eligible businesses across Greater Shepparton.

The Business Mentor Program is designed to strengthen the region's business community by encouraging knowledge exchange, building stronger networks and helping local operators build confidence in key areas such as planning, cashflow, marketing, digital capability, human resources and resilience.

Each successful applicant will be matched with an experienced local mentor for two structured 60 minute sessions over a three month period. Sessions will focus on identifying goals, exploring challenges and creating a simple action plan.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the program reflects Council's commitment to backing local businesses with practical support.

"Our local business community is full of experience and knowledge. This program connects that experience with business operators who are looking for guidance," he said.

"Running a business can feel isolating at times. Having access to someone who has been through similar challenges can make a real difference. This is about strengthening our networks and supporting businesses to grow in a sustainable way."

Council's Economic Development Engagement Coordinator, Karen Mellington, said the value of the program lies in local businesses sharing what they have learned through experience.

"Running a business comes with challenges that are not always written in a textbook," she said.

"Being able to speak with someone who has faced similar situations and understands the local environment can provide perspective and reassurance. This program creates a supportive space for honest conversations, clear thinking and stronger connections within our business community."

The program is open to Greater Shepparton businesses in their early stages or looking to strengthen their operations. Applications will be assessed against eligibility criteria to help ensure a strong and suitable fit for each mentoring partnership.

Applications for the May to July 2026 mentoring period are now open and close Monday 27 April 2026.

Businesses can also explore the profiles of participating mentors online to learn more about their background, experience and areas of expertise before applying.
