Griffith City Council has been advised that safety upgrade works are being planned for Kidman Way, the site of a tragic truck accident last week that claimed the life of a local man.
Council has raised serious concerns about this stretch of road with Transport for NSW on numerous occasions over many years, and again approached Transport following this most recent tragedy to urgently reiterate the community's safety concerns.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran, said the news provides a sense of hope during an incredibly difficult time for the community.
"Our thoughts are first and foremost with the family, friends and loved ones who are grieving an unimaginable loss," Mayor Curran said.
"Council has consistently advocated for safety improvements along Kidman Way, writing to the Minister and Transport for NSW on multiple occasions and sharing the distressing experiences of motorists who have reported near misses and serious incidents on this road.
"Following this latest tragic accident, Council again contacted Transport for NSW, and we have been assured that this section of Kidman Way is firmly on their radar.
"While nothing can undo the heartbreak being felt by the family and our wider community, we are extremely hopeful that a positive outcome is now very close and that meaningful safety improvements will help prevent further tragedy."
Council will continue to work closely with Transport for NSW and keep the community informed as more details about any upgrade works become available.
