Council Urges Support for Community Pantry Drive

Council is encouraging residents to support a local initiative aimed at helping those doing it tough, by contributing to a donation drive for the Community Pantry located outside Linking Communities Network on Yambil Street.

The pantry operates on a simple concept, give what you can, take what you need, and has become a quiet source of support for many in our community. However, it's often left empty as demand continues to grow.

A small group of local volunteers have been working hard to keep the pantry stocked, but they can't do it alone. Council is asking the community to rally behind this grassroots effort by donating pantry staples, non-perishable food items and toiletries.

Local advocate and the person behind the idea, Cai Holroyd, said that the Community Pantry was formed by putting focus on the difference we can all make on our immediate surroundings.

"The pantry is a mash of a community library and food bank. Books are great, but they're not what you need when you're hungry," he said.

"A lot of people are struggling with cost-of-living pressures and sometimes it's not easy to ask for help. This is a way to discreetly give to those in need."

Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said the initiative was a simple yet powerful way for locals to support one another.

"A small gesture like donating a tin of food or a bar of soap can make a real difference to someone in need," Cr Curran said.

"This pantry is a symbol of kindness and community spirit and by helping stock it, we're sending a clear message that no one in Griffith is alone."

You can donate to the pantry or take items you need 24/7.
