Councillor Simon Croce has been elected as Griffith's Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months, the first time he has held the position in his 17 years on Council.
The vote took place on Tuesday, 22 September, 2020 at the Ordinary Council Meeting, with Councillor Croce and Councillor Doug Curran nominating for the role. An Open Vote (show of hands) gave a result of 5:5, with Cr Croce being proclaimed Deputy Mayor.
Councillor Croce said he is looking forward to serving as Deputy Mayor for the final year in this term of Council and will do his best to help achieve great things for the broader Griffith community.
"I am passionate about our community and look forward to working with the Mayor and the rest of Council to achieve the goals set out in our last year of the Council Term," said Councillor Croce.
"I thought it was time I threw my hat in the ring to have a go. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with my fellow Councillors to get things done. We have a lot ahead of us and despite the naysayers, we are achieving a lot.
"I consider it a great honour to represent this community and as Deputy Mayor I'll do my best to support the Mayor in any way I can."
Mayor John Dal Broi welcomed Councillor Croce's election as Deputy Mayor, saying the two have always worked well together.
"I congratulate Councillor Croce and look forward to working with him," he said.
"I'd also like to thank Councillor Curran who has performed very well in the role over the past two years."
The position of Deputy Mayor is elected by the members of the Council annually while the Mayor is popularly elected every four years.
