Countback Election Update

Gwydir Shire Council

Following the resignation of Cr Marilyn Dixon OAM, the NSW Electoral Commission will conduct a Countback Election to fill the casual vacancy on Council.

A countback uses the ballot papers from the last Council election to determine the next elected councillor, meaning residents do not need to vote again and compulsory voting does not apply.

Only candidates who nominated at the last election but were not elected are eligible to participate. If one eligible candidate applies, they are automatically elected. If none apply, a by-election will be required.

The countback election will be run entirely by the NSW Electoral Commission.

Key dates run through February and March, with the result to be declared on 17 March 2026.
