COVID clarity critical as case numbers rise

Tasmanian Labor

At a time of the year when many Tasmanians may already be experiencing heightened anxiety, it is critical the government provide people with clear, timely and consistent information as COVID case numbers continue to rise across the state.

Shadow Health Minister Anita Dow said in the week since the borders reopened Tasmania now has 52 cases of COVID, which understandably will raise concern and anxiety in the community.

"We are already hearing from Tasmanians who have raised the need for better communication from the government at this challenging time," Ms Dow said.

"We have heard from a member of the community identified as a casual contact on a plane who was sent an email to advise them of this, an email that could easily be dismissed as spam due to it being from an unknown person and not public health.

"We have also heard from a small business owner whose business only found out it was an exposure site through social media.

"This poor communication does nothing to instil confidence in Tasmanians."

Ms Dow said the government has had ample time to ensure the systems and processes are in place to protect Tasmanians and keep them well informed now COVID is in the community.

"We have continued to question the government's preparedness when it comes to our health system, testing and tracing capacity, support for our health workforce, support for our businesses and the ability to provide clear and timely information.

"It is crucial that at this uncertain and already busy time of year that the government communicate clearly and effectively with Tasmanians as we begin to live with COVID."
