Greater Shepparton City Council wishes to advise that Councillor Shane Sali has stepped down from his position as Mayor of Greater Shepparton City Council, effective today Monday 7 September 2026, and will seek to take a leave of absence from Council.
Cr Sali has served as Mayor since June 2022, holding the role for four consecutive terms.
Cr Sali said serving as Mayor over the past four years had been one of the greatest privileges of his life.
"I came into Council wanting to make a difference and to get things done. I'm proud of what we have achieved together advocating strongly for our region, securing investment, supporting local businesses and jobs, progressing important infrastructure and making sure Greater Shepparton's voice was heard well beyond our municipal boundaries," he said.
"Thank you to the Greater Shepparton community for placing your trust in me and allowing me the privilege of serving you as Mayor. Thank you to my fellow Councillors, Council staff and everyone I have had the opportunity to work alongside."
Chief Executive Officer, Fiona Le Gassick, acknowledged and thanked Cr Sali for his outstanding service to the community.
"During his time as Mayor, Shane has been a strong advocate for Greater Shepparton, working alongside Councillors, staff, government and community stakeholders to progress important priorities for our region," she said.
"His commitment, leadership and passion for Greater Shepparton have been evident throughout his tenure, and I have greatly valued the opportunity to work closely with him.
"On behalf of the organisation, I thank Shane for his contribution to Greater Shepparton and wish him all the very best for the future."
In accordance with the Local Government Act, Deputy Mayor Cr Geoff Akers will undertake the responsibilities of Mayor while Council undertakes the process to elect a new Mayor. A mayoral election is required to be held within 30 days of the position becoming vacant.
Cr Sali will remain on a leave of absence until the results of the November State Election have been declared.
