Creating a 'heart safe' community

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is committed to a 'heart safe' community through providing access to defibrillators in public places, to community groups and clubs and at council and community facilities.

As part of this commitment, Council has developed its draft Defibrillators in Public Policy which is on public exhibition until 5pm Monday 14 September 2020.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn said "the Policy looks to ensure all relevant Council-managed public spaces and workplaces have well maintained defibrillators, and Council advocates on behalf of sports clubs and community groups to maximise their access to funds in order to acquire defibrillators".

Council has also partnered with Defibs Plus to support the Heart Smart Program. This is a joint initiative between Ambulance Victoria, Monash Paramedicine and the Monash Heart Hospital to:

  • build confidence in the community with bystander CPR
  • educate on the use of defibrillators
  • raise community awareness about heart health.

This program initially identifies communities where there can be a significant wait for responses to ambulance call outs and provides free training and support with the purchase of an approved defibrillator. The program has already been trialled on the Peninsula in the Red Hill/Flinders areas.
