A creek in Edmonton should soon be renamed, following a request by the Traditional Owner group, Gimuy Walubara Yidinji to the Queensland Department of Natural Resources that 'Blackfellows Creek' is no longer culturally appropriate.
Cairns Regional Council last year renamed the adjoining park of the same name to the Allan and May Oliver Park / Bana Gindarja Park, and has supported the request to rename the creek.
Traditional Owners have requested that the department change the creek name to Bana Gindarja Creek. The two-month community consultation process is expected to start soon.
