Strengthening Cricket Through Inclusion and Volunteer Spirit

As part of National Volunteers Week, Cricket Victoria is proud to recognise Priya Rajendra for her outstanding contribution to cricket and her commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming game for all.

A passionate volunteer at North Balwyn Cricket Club, Priya has played a pivotal role in building pathways for women and girls from all backgrounds-particularly those with disabilities-to get involved in cricket. Her leadership and drive have helped remove barriers and create opportunities for more people to enjoy the game we love.

Priya has been instrumental in supporting the integration of the Melbourne Deaf Cricket Club (MDCC) Women's Willows team into North Balwyn Cricket Club and the Eastern Girls and Women's Competition (EGWC).

With a strong focus on inclusion and identity, she has ensured the team feels both recognised and valued. Custom MDCC Willows pins and uniforms have helped preserve the team's unique identity, while fostering a sense of belonging within the broader club community.

Priya's efforts extend beyond the field, having recently helped deliver a successful AUSLAN awareness event, raising the profile of the Women's Willows team and building greater understanding around deaf inclusion in sport. Events like these highlight Priya's attitude towards cricket, that it is more than just a game - it's a vehicle to drive connection, empowerment and community engagement.

In recognition of these efforts, Priya has been awarded both Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia's Community Cricket Award for Inclusion and Diversity Initiative of the Year.

Through her work, Priya has created a safe and supportive space for women and girls to grow in confidence, build friendships, and experience the many benefits that come from being part of a team. Her leadership has strengthened the culture of North Balwyn Cricket Club and expanded its reach to new participants across the community.

Volunteers are the heart of community cricket, and Priya exemplifies the values that make our game great – leadership, inclusivity, and a genuine passion for helping others.

We thank Priya and the thousands of volunteers statewide for their continued dedication to making cricket more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for all.
