Critical incident declared after death of man in state's north

A critical incident investigation has commenced following the death of a man in the state's north yesterday.

About 5.40pm (Thursday 29 September 2022), officers from Tweed/Byron Police District attempted to stop a vehicle on Centennial Circuit at Byron Bay, due to its manner of driving.

The vehicle failed to stop and continued travelling north along the M1, before road spikes were deployed successfully near Cudgera Creek.

The vehicle slowed down, before the driver exited the vehicle on the M1 at Clothiers Creek and was struck by a passing vehicle.

The man died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District established a crime scene which will be forensically examined by officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit.

The M1 was closed, and local diversions were implemented. All roads have since reopened.

A Critical Incident Investigation Team from Richmond Police District will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to an independent review and all information will be provided to the Coroner.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
