Critical incident declared after serious crash at Shellharbour

A critical incident investigation has been launched following a serious crash at Shellharbour today.

About 10.30am (Tuesday 24 August 2021), officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attempted to stop a truck travelling north in the southbound lanes on the Princes Highway at Croom, about 9km west of Shellharbour.

When it failed to stop, a pursuit commenced.

A short time later, the truck and a dual cab vehicle collided head on in the southbound lane.

A passenger in the dual cab, a woman believed to be aged in her 50s, was ejected from the vehicle and struck by another vehicle. She was treated at the scene before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

The truck driver, a man aged in his 40s, was not injured. He was arrested at the scene and taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory testing.

A Critical Investigation team is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject to independent review.

The southbound lanes of the Princes Highway are currently closed.
