Critical incident investigation into man's death in Engadine

A critical incident investigation has been launched following the death of a man at Engadine today, NSW Police say.

About 7am (Friday 23 November 2018) police were called to a home in Ridge Road at Engadine following reports of a domestic situation.

Police believe a firearm was discharged at the front door of the home.

A 56-year-old man suffered a minor gunshot wound to his forehead and was treated at the scene by Ambulance paramedics.

Police from Sutherland Police Area Command attended and located an 81-year-old man attempting to leave the area in a vehicle.

The man pointed the firearm at the police officers when challenged by them.

He then discharged the firearm, suffering a self-inflicted gun-shot wound, to his neck.

The man was unable to be revived and subsequently died at the scene.

A critical incident investigation team from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to an independent review and will be monitored by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

All information will be provided to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading up to the man’s death.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
