DAF Revamps SkillBridge to Balance Readiness, Aid Transition

The Department of the Air Force updated its Air Force and Space Force SkillBridge programs to balance operational readiness and transition assistance to Airmen and Guardians. This update adjusts the length of program participation into rank-specific categories and clarifies specific commander levels required to approve applications related to a service member's rank.

These policy refinements balance the need for units to maintain operational readiness, while also ensuring eligible Airmen and Guardians can access opportunities aimed to support their transition to the civilian workforce.

DAF service members remain eligible to participate in the SkillBridge program during their last 180 days of service. The revised policies for the Air Force and Space Force limit maximum participation within that 180-day window based on the member's rank. This new structure replaces the previous policy, which allowed a flat 180-day window for all ranks. The changes also require approvals from commanders on G-series orders, compared to previous approvals allowed at lower levels.

The Air Force SkillBridge program is structured into three categories listed below. Participation for Air Force colonels requires specific exception-to-policy approval.
