Dangerous Driving Incident Charges, TAS

On Sunday evening into Monday morning a number of offences were committed in the Western and Northern Police Districts, Tasmania Police say.

These include the aggravated burglary of a Turners Beach residence and the assault of two occupants, and business burglaries in the Devonport, Port Sorell, Hagley and Hadspen areas. These matters appeared to be linked.

Just after 1:30pm on Monday, police detected a vehicle of interest in relation to those crimes driving dangerously in Tarleton Street, East Devonport.

The vehicle, with three occupants, drove towards Launceston on the Bass Highway.

The vehicle was observed to be driving on the edge of the road on the wrong side of the Highway.

When police came across the vehicle, it had crashed on the Highway outside Ashgrove Cheese.

One person was taken into custody.

Two other men in the vehicle ran from the scene and stole a white Nissan Navara and drove on the Highway towards Launceston.

It was reported to be driving at high speed and overtaking dangerously.

While police attempted to intercept the vehicle using spikes, the vehicle continued to evade.

The vehicle was later located abandoned in the area of Collins Street, Perth.

The two occupants had left the vehicle when police arrived.

Police subsequently conducted cordon and search operations in the Perth and Relbia areas.

At around 6pm two males were taken into custody.

As the result of investigations the following has occurred:

  • a 42 year old man from Launceston has been arrested on warrant and remanded in custody
  • an 18 year old man and 25 year old man, both from Launceston, have been charged with Aggravated Burglary x 3, Burglary x 4, Wounding x 2, Stealing x 5 and motor vehicle stealing.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing and it is expected further charges will be laid as it progresses.

Police wish to thank the public for their assistance during this operation which was crucial.

Police would like to speak to anyone that:

  • observed the white Magna sedan driving dangerously in the Devonport, Sassafras or Elizabeth Town areas.
  • observed a white flat tray single cab ute driving in a similar manner on the between Elizabeth Town, Longford and Perth.
  • has information in relation to the burglaries.
