“Tasmanians came out in force at the last moment to vote in this year’s local government elections, with the electoral commission reporting the highest return in more than 20 years.” – ABC news online, October 30, 2018
The Government welcomes reports that Tasmania has recorded its strongest voter turnout for Local Government elections in more than 20 years.
It is particularly amusing that this has occurred just two days after Labor’s attention-deprived wannabe leader David O’Byrne called a press conference to call council voter turnout “a crisis”.
It’s now clearer than ever that Labor’s calls for compulsory voting in council elections are entirely self-interested. It’s about Labor wanting to get control of local councils.
This is not a priority for the Government at the moment and it can be considered through the review of the Local Government Act.
