Death in custodyin Brisbane Watchhouse

Police from the Ethical Standards Command are investigating the death of a woman in the Brisbane City Watchhouse today.

The 49-year-old woman was located deceased in her cell this morning.

She had been arrested for property and drug matters on the morning of Sunday, September 6.

She appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday (September 7) and was remanded in custody until October 7. She was being held in the watchhouse pending a transfer to a correctional facility.

While the circumstances of the death are to be determined, the investigation will include consideration of any underlying health conditions.

Cultural support is being provided by Murri Watch with representatives visiting the watchhouse this morning.

The matter is being overviewed by the Office of the State Coroner and the Crime and Corruption Commission.
