Death in police custody at Elsternwick

Police are investigating following a death in police custody in Elsternwick early this morning., Victoria Police say

Police were called to a bar on Glenhuntly Road following reports of a man assaulting patrons at the premises about 2.15am.

On arrival, the man was being held down by a number of people.

Police arrested the man and placed him in handcuffs when he lost consciousness.

Police attempted to revive the man until Ambulance Victoria arrived and took over.

Despite the efforts of emergency service personnel, the man died at the scene.

The man is yet to be formally identified.

A post mortem examination will be conducted to try and determine the cause of death.

All deaths in police custody are investigated by the Homicide Squad, with oversight from Professional Standards Command as per standard practice
