Death of a man police custody

A man in police custody has died after he was found unresponsive in the rear of a divisional van on Friday afternoon.

The 30-year-old Keilor Downs man came to police attention after threatening self-harm at a hospital in Fitzroy about 12pm on Friday, 5 February.

After being released from hospital the man was taken into custody in relation to a number of outstanding whereabouts.

He was later found unresponsive in the rear of a divisional van while the van was at the Victoria Police Centre on Spencer Street.

The man was subsequently conveyed to hospital where he passed away on Monday, 8 February.

Detectives from the Homicide Squad are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the man's death.

Officers from Professional Standard Command, as standard practice, will have oversight of the investigation as the incident occurred while the man was in police custody.
