Death of an inmate from Collins Bay Institution

On September 27, 2019, Thomas Tomelty, an inmate from Collins Bay Institution died while in our custody of apparent natural causes following an illness.

At the time of his death, Mr. Tomelty, 55 years old, had been serving a sentence of 2 years, 2 months and 29 days since June 21, 2017 for Assaulting a peace officer, Possession of Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of Schedule I substance and Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

The inmate's next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
