Death of an inmate from La Macaza Institution

December 5, 2018 – La Macaza, Quebec – Correctional Service Canada

On December 2, 2018, Mr. Mario Fleurant, an inmate from La Macaza Institution, died while in our custody.

At the time of his death, Mr. Fleurant, 50 years old, had been serving an indeterminate sentence since March 21, 2007 for aggravated assault, sexual assault, assault causing bodily harm, carrying a weapon, possession of drugs, robbery, infringement of the municipal by-laws, kidnapping, abduction, and obstructing the work of a peace officer in the execution of her/his duty.

The inmate's next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
