Death of Renée Geyer

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

Australia has lost an incredible voice and talent today with the passing of Renée Geyer, at the age of 69.

Renée was a legend, a pioneer, and as authentic as they come.

From her early years performing with jazz-rock group Sun, to her highly successful solo career, Renée entertained Australians and the world for more than 50 years.

Renée cemented her status as a legend with her induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2005 and when she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Australian Women in Music Awards.

It was at the 2019 AWMA that I last saw Renée perform, one year after receiving her Lifetime Achievement Award.

More than four decades after entering the charts, her voice was as powerful and captivating as ever.

Australia and Australian music are so much richer for having heard it.

My thoughts are with Renée's family, friends and loved ones at this very difficult time. I extend my deepest sympathies to them as they deal with this terrible news.
