Death of woman in police custody

A woman in police custody has died after she was found unresponsive at Ballarat police station today.

The 50-year-old Ballarat woman was taken into custody on Thursday, 26 August and was remanded to appear in court today.

She was found unresponsive when police attended her cell to escort her to court.

Paramedics were immediately called and officers commenced CPR. Paramedics were unable to revive the woman and she died a short time later.

Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the death, with oversight from Professional Standards Command.

This is standard protocol when a person has died in police custody.
