Deceptive Archer must tell truth

Tasmanian Labor

Corrections Minister Elise Archer must tell Tasmanians the truth about the dire situation at Risdon Prison.

Shadow Corrections Minister Ella Haddad said Ms Archer was deceiving Tasmanians.

"Minister Archer continues to deceive Tasmanians with claims she has hired 200 staff in Risdon Prison," Ms Haddad said.

"Yet what she fails to say is that not all of these staff are still employed by the prison and many others have left.

"This deceptive behaviour is simply unacceptable and instead of trying to spin her way out of trouble, Ms Archer should focus her energy on supporting prison staff who are at breaking point."

Ms Haddad said Risdon Prison was a pressure cooker and needed real action now.

"Ms Archer knows what is happening at the prison. She knows staff are under incredible pressure and she knows that inmates are being consistently forced into 24-hour lockdowns, sometimes lasting several days on end.

"Tasmanians are tired of hearing the Minister's deceptive claims.

"It is time for Ms Archer to take real action before the situation at Risdon Prison gets even worse."
