The Victorian Greens have called the Andrews Labor Government's decision to avoid tax reform in the upcoming Budget a missed opportunity.
The Greens say the current stamp duty tax system is outdated and locks out many young Victorians from the housing market, leading to increasing numbers of people facing housing insecurity.
Acting Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell, said this once-in-a-generation Budget would have provided the perfect opportunity for bold reform, and that it was disappointing to see the Government avoid it.
New South Wales recently announced a plan to give people the option between paying stamp duty when buying a house, or paying a small annual property tax for as long as they own the house. It's high time Victoria look to introduce a similar system.
As stated by Acting Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell MP:
"It's a real shame the Andrews Government has decided not to take a bold step and change the outdated stamp duty tax system in Victoria.
"It's a missed opportunity to do something really big and bold that would mean we have a more stable tax base in future and help with housing affordability."
