Cybersecurity experts from across Defence and the world have been put to the test at the Australian Defence Force Cyber Skills Association's Cyber Skills Challenge 2025 held in Canberra recently.
The Cyber Skills Challenge brought together experts from across the Navy, Army, Air Force, Australian Public Service, industry partners, and international allies to tackle real-world cyber security scenarios.
Participants took part in a wide range of interactive challenges and workshops designed to sharpen skills in cyber detection, engineering, intelligence, investigation, penetration, and protection.
The workshops and challenges reflected the complexity of today's cyber domain and provided practical, engaging experiences for all attendees.
Participants also explored career opportunities in Defence cyber, gaining insights into the skills required to succeed in a rapidly evolving strategic environment.
The Challenge reinforced Defence's commitment to building and sustaining a specialised cyber workforce capable of innovatively developing and operating capabilities to fight in and through the cyber domain.
Brigadier Hamish Ashman, President of the Cyber Skills Association, said the Cyber Skills Challenge was about preparing our people for the realities of modern conflict.
"Cyber threats are increasing in scale and complexity, and we need the best and brightest to step forward and become our cyber warriors," Brigadier Hamish Ashman said.
"This event is not just about technical excellence, it's about increasing innovation and resilience. The ability to think creatively under pressure is what will give us the edge in the cyber domain.
"The cyber domain takes a collaborative approach. Bringing together Defence, industry, and international partners ensures we share knowledge and strengthen our collective capability. That unity is critical to staying ahead of adversaries.
"The skills developed here will shape the next generation of cyber leaders. We're building a workforce that can adapt, innovate, and protect Australia's interests in an increasingly contested digital environment."
The National Defence Strategy has identified enhanced cyber capabilities as critical to safeguarding ADF networks and maintaining operational advantage.
The Cyber Skills Challenge 2025 demonstrated how Defence is meeting this challenge head-on by investing in talent and innovation.
