We are working with 5 state governments and investing $100 million. Our aim: to expand Australia's protected and conserved areas.
Australian Bushland Program
This is the first announcement under the Australian Bushland Program (ABP). The $250 million program supports Australia's goal to protect 30 per cent of land by 2030.
These first payments will protect or conserve more than 2.3 million hectares. Projects will also assess over 21 million hectares to find other potential areas for protection or conservation.
This work focuses on regions that are underrepresented and areas with strong biodiversity values. It will support threatened species and the places they rely on.
Project information
12 projects in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania will deliver practical conservation.
They will:
- expand private land covenanting programs
- investigate areas for conservation
- support strategic land purchases.
They will apply the national framework for conserved areas and review Crown and other land for possible protection or conservation.
Ongoing work
To reach the 30 by 30 target, Australia needs to protect or conserve another 39 million hectares.
States and territories are key partners. Working with them helps deliver results faster and in the right places.
We will continue working with the remaining states and territories to design and fund more projects.
We will keep you updated as initial contracts are finalised and work continues.
