Dendrobium extension would support local jobs and community

CFMEU Mining and Energy

The Mining and Energy Union has welcomed South32's submission of new plans to extend the life of Dendrobium Underground mine.

"Dendrobium mine is a major regional employer with over 500 jobs at the mine, but its contribution to local economic prosperity is far greater than direct jobs," said MEU South Western District Secretary Andy Davey.

"The mine supports thousands of jobs indirectly through the supply chain and through the involvement of local mining families in the community.

"The jobs and economic activity generated by the mine are crucial to the Mt Kembla community.

"Dendrobium coal is also needed for steel-making at Bluescope, it is an important ingredient in our local steel that we need for manufacturing.

"Mining has been part of our District's social and economic fabric for generations. We believe South32's revised proposal addresses community concerns so the mine can continue to sustain local families for years to come. We strongly urge the NSW Government to back the Dendrobium extension."
