Devonport CIB investigates arson in George St in Devonport, TAS

Devonport CIB is investigating a suspicious fire in George St, Devonport, overnight, Tasmania Police say.

Around 9:15 pm on Sunday 23 September 2018, emergency services were called to a unit fire in George Street, Devonport.

Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) extinguished the blaze, however unfortunately the property suffered extensive damage.

A subsequent examination, conducted by TFS Fire Scene Examiners and Police, has determined that the fire was deliberately lit. The matter is now the subject of further investigation by police.

The occupant was home at the time of the fire and nobody suffered injuries as a result.

Damage has been estimated around $50,000.

Detective Constable Fitzgerald from Devonport CIB said:

"The investigation is following a specific line of inquiry at this time. We would like to speak to anyone who may have information about the fire, particularly anyone who may have seen any suspicious behaviour around the units at 63 George Street, approximately 9:15pm."
