Digital inclusion firmly on national agenda

Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for Science and Technology

Today, I was pleased to attend the Data and Digital Ministers' meeting in Canberra.

Ministers discussed important issues including digital inclusion, digital ID and national data sharing.

There has never been a better time for Digital Ministers to get around the table to address issues connected with improved cyber security, inclusion and data management for all Australians.

Ministers supported digital inclusion as a standing agenda item, which will support a national conversation on this important issue.

In an increasingly digital world, the ability to use digital devices and access services has become a fundamental skill for navigating daily life.

The Tasmanian Government is focused on delivering a number of practical measures to assist Tasmanians to enhance their digital skills.

In March 2021, the Government reconfirmed its commitment to build Tasmania as a confident, better connected digital economy by providing $700,000 to extend the Digital Ready for Daily Life program to June 2025.

Four Digital Ambassadors will promote the range of free digital assistance available around the State, as well as provide small group training sessions directly to our communities.

Ministers also agreed today to progress two key initiatives; developing an agreement to streamline data sharing between governments for the National Disability Data Asset; and developing a national data catalogue of public data assets.

The national data catalogue will shorten the time taken to identify and access relevant data, supporting governments to make the best decisions, including when responding to future health or other emergencies.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is the strongest supporter of our ICT industry, which makes a significant contribution to our economy.
