Disappointment for kids and families as popular annual event cancelled

Tasmanian Labor

Families across Tasmania are disappointed that, despite the state opening up, annual volunteer fire service Christmas lolly runs have been cancelled.

Shadow Police, Fire and Emergency Management Minister Michelle O'Byrne said the statewide directive to cancel the annual community event was extremely disappointing for thousands of children and families across Tasmania.

"It's a sad consequence of the COVID pandemic that important events like this need to be put on hold in the interests of everyone's safety," Ms O'Byrne said.

"Perhaps advice should have been provided early so that this disappointment was avoided because this is a tradition that kids and their families look forward to and line up in driveways waiting for.

"I know that kids and families will be sad it's not going ahead but in this very different pandemic world, we all need to be patient and understanding."
