Assistant Minister for Industry Development Jonno Duniam says tourism businesses across Tasmania will benefit from an influx of tourists from the Morrison Government's 800,000 half-price airfare tickets, as part of the $1.2 billion tourism and aviation package.
Burnie, Devonport, Launceston and Hobart are among the initial 15 regions that the Government is supporting through its discounted airfares initiative.
Assistant Minister Duniam said over 100,000 tickets had been snapped up in the 12 hours since the airfares went on sale.
"Tasmania's tourism industry was hit hard by the pandemic, but our tourism operators are resilient, and we will do whatever we can to help them bounce back," Assistant Minister Duniam said.
"Our regional tourism destinations will reap the benefits of this initiative, along with our major centres.
"The money that travellers are saving means they can support a café in Stanley, hotel in Launceston and winery in the Coal River Valley.
"Before COVID-19, domestic tourism nationally made up approximately 77 per cent - or $107 billion - of tourism spend and the half-price flights initiative will help to get domestic spending pumping again."
