Disgracefully out of touch

Tasmanian Labor
  • Liberals joined by Ogilvie to vote down power price relief
  • Households struggling with huge power bills
  • Tasmanians punished for staying home when asked
  • The Liberal government has demonstrated how disgracefully out of touch it is with the financial pain being felt by Tasmanians.

Shadow Minister for Energy David O'Byrne said the government had an opportunity today to provide relief to Tasmanians who are now receiving horrendous power bills, but chose not to.

"People did the right thing by Tasmania and stayed home during the worst of the pandemic - many dealing with job losses and reduced hours, as well as supervising their children's home learning.

"The bills that are arriving in people's letterboxes right now include catch-up charges, which are causing severe bill shock.

"This afternoon Madeline Ogilvie showed her hand by voting with the Liberals to block a push by Labor for the government to provide immediate power bill relief for Tasmanians.

"It was good enough for the Liberals to woo votes in the lead up to the 2018 election by issuing an energy supplement in the middle of summer.

"At the time Guy Barnett said it was designed to 'deliver … acknowledgement that they have been doing it tough. I can't think of when Tasmanians have faced tougher circumstances.

"Why is the government ignoring the genuine power price pain Tasmanians are feeling now?"

    David O'Byrne

    Shadow Minister for Energy
