Diwali To Light Up Deakin

Fireworks will bathe Deakin University's Waurn Ponds Campus in light this Friday as Diwali returns in a spectacle of splendour and colour.

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is an annual global celebration signifying the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

Deakin has a rich history in hosting Diwali celebrations, and this year's free, family-friendly event features cultural performances, a DJ, food and market stalls, henna art and vibrant Rangoli - a traditional Indian art creating brilliant patterns on the ground using material like coloured powders, rice flour, sand and flower petals.

And, of course, don't miss the spectacular fireworks display at 9:00pm.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:

Diwali is a breathtaking celebration of Geelong's third-largest and fastest-growing culture.

I can't wait to join the crowds at this year's event and celebrate the beautiful and rich multicultural tapestry that makes Geelong such a wonderful place to live.

Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin:

We are part of a wonderfully diverse community here in Geelong and the Diwali Festival brings together people of all backgrounds in a joyful celebration of culture and inclusion.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to our Waurn Ponds campus for this free community event where you can enjoy fantastic music, food and cultural performances to celebrate the Festival of Lights!

Diwali will take place at Deakin University's Waurn Ponds Campus 6:00–9:00pm on Friday 24 October.
